Blue Majik Smoothie

Blue majik smoothie.

This Blue Majik smoothie brings me so much joy every time I drink it. It may look naughty because of its vibrant purple color, but it’s jam packed with nutrition. It’s rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, it’s anti-inflammatory, high in fiber, and overall a healthy and fun way to get some nutrition in. Color is a big mood lifter, and if you eat/drink something that looks beautiful and brings you joy at the same time, your body and cells take in that joy and nutrition and deliver it where it needs to go in your body. I’ve been wanting to try Blue Majik in a recipe because of its vibrant blue color, and I’m so happy I finally did it.

What is Blue Majik?

Blue Majik is simply blue spirulina, and is a natural food coloring made from the dried biomass of Arthrospira platensis, commonly referred to as “blue-green algae.” Blue Majik is a great source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It has many health benefits, including improved energy levels, better digestion, and reduced inflammation and may improve cardiovascular health and enhance cognitive function.

This smoothie is nutrient dense, full of antioxidants from the blueberries and Blue Majik, healthy Omega-3 fats from the coconut butter and hemp oil, lots of fiber from the dates and blueberries. It also is a natural mood booster from the color alone. If you’re looking for a way to get your kids to drink some nutrition, then have them try this smoothie. I mean what kid wouldn’t want to drink a purple smoothie?

Here’s a photo of it before it’s blended. See how blue it is?

The blueberries turn that vibrant blue into a vibrant purple.

This smoothie is nutrient dense, full of protein from the hemp seeds, and bone broth collagen, full of antioxidants from the blueberries and Blue Majik, healthy Omega-3 fats from the coconut butter and hemp seeds, flax oil, lots of fiber from the dates, flax oil and blueberries. If you use coconut water, it's full of electrolytes. It also is a natural mood booster from the color alone. If you're looking for a way to get your kids to drink some nutrition, then have them try this smoothie. I mean what kid wouldn't want to drink a purple smoothie?

    Ingredients

    • 1 cup coconut water, or unsweetened almond milk, coconut milk or homemade coconut hemp milk - I love using coconut water as it's a natural source of electrolytes, which help hydrate your body and is great especially after a workout.

    • 3 tablespoon hemp seeds, also called hemp hearts. Hemp seeds are a complete protein, meaning they have all the amino acids our body need, and 3 tablespoons gives you 9-10 grams of protein. See more benefits in the notes below.

    • 1 cup frozen wild organic blueberries -wild blueberries have 2x the antioxidants of cultivated blueberries. Think about it, they have learned to adapt and survive the cold temperatures and harsh climate of Maine and Canada.

    • 1 packet, or 1 teaspoon BlueMajik E3Live - Good Earth and Erewhon sell the Blue Majik packets, so ask if you visit either store, as they move them around.

    • 1 tablespoon flax oil, or hemp seed oil - you can find both in the refrigerated section of the health and supplement area at most grocery stores. Flax is high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which we all know we need more of.  It can reduce cholesterol and reduce inflammation.

    • 1 tablespoon raw coconut butter - coconut butter is made from the meat of the coconut, and includes actual pieces of coconut meat in it, so it's different than coconut oil. Coconut butter is rich in lauric acid, which boosts immunity and destroys harmful bacteria, viruses, and funguses. It actually boosts your metabolism, which aids in weight loss and increases energy levels. It’s packed with healthy fats, so you feel full longer, and it's full of essential amino acids, calcium, and magnesium. You can find this coconut butter at most grocery stores.

    • Pinch pink Himalayan sea salt

    • 1 scoop unflavored protein collagen powder, or your favorite collagen powder  - I love this one from Paleovalley, as it's grass fed & grass finished, no hormones, and the collagen is from the bones not the hides. It also provides 15 grams of protein, and 15 grams of collagen protein. Use my link for 15% off

    • Optional - 1 tablespoon organic cold milled flaxseed - this will make the smoothie thicker

    • Topping
    • Bee pollen - you can find this in the refrigerated section of the health and supplement area at most grocery stores. Try and find one that's local to your area and from a reputable source. For those that are local, I love Bay Area Bee Company's bee pollen. You can get this at Good Earth.

    Directions

    • Add the above ingredients (except the bee pollen) to a high powered blender and blend on high until smooth! I absolutely love my Vitamix and have had it for years! I honestly use it 3x a day, no kidding!

    • Pour smoothie into a glass, top with bee pollen, add a colored glass straw and enjoy!

    Recipe updates

    • This is not your traditional thick smoothie, it's thinner in texture due to the coconut water. I've updated this smoothie, by moving away from using a nut milk as the base to coconut water, but I kept the milks in the ingredient list for those of you that like a creamier smoothie. I personally love the coconut water, as it's an easy way to get natural electrolyte's into your body.
    • I've also updated this recipe by adding in 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are rich in protein (3 tablespoons = 9 grams of protein). Hemp is loaded with all 20 amino acids (including the 9 essential). They’re also a complete source of protein, meaning they contain the full arsenal of muscle-building essential amino acids, comparable to what you’d find in meat, eggs and dairy. 1 tablespoon of hemp fulfills the daily requirements for essential fatty acids. Hemp contains the ideal 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, both which can help the body metabolize fat. The protein found in hemp seed is very digestible, making it a great choice for sensitive diets. Hemp stimulates hair and nail growth, improves the health of the skin and can reduce inflammation.
